Go Ultra-Wide with Tamron's New 12-20mm f/2.8 Lens: First Impressions

I've always loved ultra-wide lenses for capturing extreme near-far landscape compositions. Tamron just announced a lens that dives deep into ultra-wide territory: their new 12-20mm f/2.8, which offers a sweeping angle of view of approximately 122° on the wide end. This lens is going to be a great choice for full-frame mirrorless Sony and Nikon users looking to take the plunge into the amazing world of ultra-wide photography.

Why I Love Ultra-Wide Lenses
Wide-angle lenses allow me to create images with depth and visual energy in a way that few other focal lengths can. At first glance, the jump from a "standard" wide-angle perspective (16 or 17mm on a full-frame camera) to 12mm might not sound dramatic. In practice, it's a completely different experience.
Ultra-wide lenses excel when you simply need to fit more stuff into the image frame. When photographing expansive landscapes with lots going on in the sky, I reach for an ultra-wide. That's what I did with the photo above of the Northern Lights in Iceland; with a normal wide-angle perspective, I just simply wouldn't have been able to simultaneously capture the massive curving aurora along with its reflection in the water. Ultra-wide lenses can also "open up" interior spaces, making them appear larger and more expansive. That makes them a great choice for architecture interiors and things like narrow slot canyons and ice caves (like the one featured below from Alaska).

But what really makes ultra-wides special is the way they can be used to capture extreme perspectives and to dramatically transform the relative sizes of objects. The ultra-wide field of view makes everything appear smaller, with distant visual elements seeming farther away. But, anything that is close to the lens can be made to appear much larger, exaggerating its size and importance in the composition. By carefully placing the lens close to an interesting foreground, you can create a powerful sense of depth that naturally leads the viewer's eye through the image. This is a technique I use constantly in my landscape photography. Whether it's patterned snow, colorful wildflowers, textured rocks, or desert cacti, an engaging foreground becomes the visual anchor that holds the entire composition together.

My Experience (So Far) With the Tamron 12-20mm f/2.8 Lens
As many of you know, I've worked with Tamron for much of my professional photography career. While overall their lens lineup is great, I've been bugging them for years for an ultra-wide lens. In early 2026, Tamron sent me a pre-production prototype version of the 12-20mm lens to shoot some marketing images. I was able to do several weeks of photography in Utah, Alaska, and Iceland before I had to return the prototype. Although I wasn't working with a final production model, I was nonetheless able to draw some conclusions from my experience with the lens.

This Lens Goes Wide — I Mean Really, Really Wide!
12mm on a full-frame camera is pretty close to the widest you can get. There are a handful of lenses out there that go a bit wider, including Canon's 10-20mm and the Laowa 10mm by Venus Optics. And, there are some ultra-wide lenses that don't go quite as wide, such as the Nikon 14-24mm. While 2mm on either side doesn't seem to be a big difference, remember that we're dealing with extremely small focal lengths; 12mm definitely gives you more creative options for framing your compositions compared to 14mm. Would 10mm have been better? For some scenes, yes, but more on that later. While not as wide as some other options, the Tamron 12-20mm goes pretty darn wide.
With any ultra-wide lens, you have to be extra careful when composing to make sure stray visual elements haven't entered into the image frame (especially feet, tripod legs, and other photographers). I find this angle of view to be especially useful when I'm trying to capture both an interesting foreground and dramatic weather; that's why I refer to my ultra-wides as my "big sky" lenses.
(Just a quick note: None of the ultra-wides I'm talking about here are fisheye lenses, including the Tamron 12-20mm lens. The lens is corrected for rectilinear distortion, so straight lines will stay straight, making this a good option for both landscape and architecture photography.)
A Great Choice for Night Photography
Many of my favorite images are made after sunset. Whether I'm photographing the Milky Way, the Northern Lights, or twilight landscapes, I need a lens that gathers as much light as possible while maintaining excellent image quality. Its constant f/2.8 aperture makes the Tamron 12-20mm an excellent choice for night photography. Shooting wide open allows me to keep shutter speeds shorter and ISO values lower while still capturing faint light. Combined with the expansive field of view, it's a natural fit for photographing auroras, stars, and other dramatic nighttime landscapes.

Unfortunately, when I had the lens (January and February) the Milky Way was mostly below the horizon, so I didn't try any star photography. So, I haven't done any tests to see if it is especially suitable for photographing stars. The best lenses for star photography minimize coma and astigmatism (which stretch stars into weird shapes). Once I get my hands on the lens again, I'll be able to thoroughly test it for star photography. That said, I don't really like using a lens this wide for Milky Way shots, I typically prefer a somewhat longer focal length (and I've found the Tamron 16-30mm lens for Sony or Nikon at 16mm to be excellent in this regard).
Sharp Images Across the Frame
One of the challenges with ultra-wide lenses is maintaining sharpness from corner to corner. During my time using the 12-20mm, I was impressed by how consistently sharp it remained throughout the zoom range. Even in challenging lighting situations, it controlled flare, ghosting, and chromatic aberration well, allowing me to concentrate on composition instead of worrying about optical compromises. I'll leave the scientific testing to the expert lens testers, but my initial impression is that the optical quality of the Tamron 12-20mm is in the same league as competing ultra-wide zooms from Sony, Canon, and Nikon.

Extreme Close Focusing Distance
One especially stand-out feature of the Tamron 12-20mm lens is its close focusing distance of 7.1 inches. Not many wide-angle lenses are able to focus this closely; most have a minimum focus distance of 11 to 12 inches. You might be thinking, so what? An ultra-wide wouldn't be your first choice for macro photography. And you are (mostly) correct — but the close focus distance is actually an incredible feature for near-far landscape compositions.
Being able to focus this extremely close means that even small objects can become bold foreground elements. For example, I took full advantage of the lens' minimum focus distance for the photo below, where I juxtaposed tiny cacti in the foreground with dramatic desert buttes in the background. Although the cacti were only several inches tall, by getting so close I was able to make them loom large in the final composition. Note that when working this close, old-fashioned depth of field and small apertures won't be enough to ensure everything is sharp from foreground to background; you'll need to focus stack.

Attractive Starburst Effect
The Tamron 12-20mm produces a really nice 12-point starburst/sunstar effect when stopped down to a small aperture like f/11 or f/16. You can see an example in the photo below, taken in Utah. I had to do some minor flare cleanup, but overall the lens' coating managed flare extremely well. Of course, this is an entirely subjective opinion, but I think the Tamron 12-20mm produces a beautiful sunstar.

Okay, So What Don’t I Like About the Tamron 12-20mm Lens?
Overall, this is a great lens, but it's not perfect. One huge downside is the bulbous front glass element, also known as a "popeye" lens design. Popeye designs are typical with ultra-wide lenses (especially when they are f/2.8), and it makes the lens heavier, bigger, and more expensive. Also, you can't use traditional screw-in filters with popeye lenses. Your only filter options are expensive and oversized filter holders, or rear filters, which are limited. Fortunately, the 12-20mm manages to stay relatively compact compared to many lenses in its class, but it's still larger and heavier than your standard wide-angle zoom.

Another area where the 12-20mm is arguably lacking is that it has a relatively limited zoom range. Many other lenses in this class go to 24mm. I actually don't think that this is a negative feature; by limiting the zoom range, Tamron was able to keep the lens smaller and lighter than it otherwise would have been. The 12-20mm range covers the focal lengths I'm most likely to use, as I stay at the wide end almost all of the time. Honestly, you don't buy an ultra-wide to shoot it at 24mm, but some users might prefer to be able to zoom in tighter when the need arises.
Would it have been better to extend the range a bit more on the wide end? My answer, of course, is "Absolutely yes!" I'd have loved it if Tamron has swung for the fences a bit more and done something like a 10-20mm lens instead. Of course, designing an even wider lens and keeping it f/2.8 would have resulted in a much larger, heavier, and more expensive lens. Another option would be to make it an f/4 lens, which is what Canon did with their 10-20mm lens (but even with that compromise, it still has a popeye design and is roughly the same size and weight as the Tamron 12-20mm). Of course, an f/4 lens wouldn't be ideal for night photography. And even I think that 10mm is too wide much of the time, and I often find that 12mm is my ultra-wide sweet spot. So, 10mm would have been nice, but having a 12mm f/2.8 optimized for night photography is arguably better.

Pricing
The Tamron 12-20mm lens will be on sale for Sony E-mount on July 30 at $1699 USD and for Nikon Z mount on August 27 at $1,799 USD. While the lens isn't cheap, it's considerably less expensive than comparable Sony, Canon, and Nikon lenses; for example, the Sony 12-24mm f/2.8 lens costs almost twice as much!
Final Thoughts
I'm sure the Tamron 12-20mm will quickly become my first choice for landscape photography, and you'll soon be seeing a lot of photos from me taken with with this lens. Whether I'm creating dramatic near-far compositions, photographing expansive skies, exploring narrow canyons, or chasing aurora, the extra width opens creative possibilities that simply aren't available with more conventional wide-angle lenses. For photographers who love immersive landscapes and dynamic perspectives, an ultra-wide lens is an entirely different way of seeing the world.
