Fotopro Origin Travel Tripod Review

I've exclusively been using Fotopro tripods for the past few years, and I have found them to be stable and dependable. Here, I review their latest release: the Origin travel tripod. My thoughts about the Origin and its capabilities are summarized in the video below. For a more thorough review, keep reading!

If you have any trouble watching the video above, you can also watch it here.

I've been testing the Fotopro Origin Plus tripod, which is a slightly bigger version of the Fotopro Origin tripod. (More on their specifications below.) Both versions are compact, travel-friendly, and made of carbon fiber. The last part is particularly important for landscape photographers or anyone who regularly travels for photoshoots; carbon fiber is both lightweight and stable.

Fotopro Origin

After around a month of using the Fotopro Origin tripod, here are a few features that have stood out to me:

  • The centre column comes out, which is perfect for when you need more or less height on your tripod. It has a hidden compartment with a hex key that you can use to unscrew the centre column or tighten up other parts of the tripod.

  • It has a standard panning base for the head that’s at the bottom of the ball head, but there’s a second panning base that’s on the top of the head. This means that you don't have to level your tripod legs if you want to do panorama photography; as long as the ball head is level, you're good to go!

  • The tripod’s flip (or clip) locks make it easy to adjust its height when you’re on location. Personally, I've never been a fan of clip locks on previous tripods I have owned (not Fotopro), as they're prone to breaking, but the ones on the Origin are made of metal and seem well-built. I'm hoping that these are more durable than the ones I've used in the past. The advantage of clip locks is that they make extension and retraction of the tripod legs easier than twist locks, and they aren't prone to getting stuck (which can be a problem with twist locks).

An important factor worth considering is the environment that you usually shoot in. If you often take photos of waterfalls or coasts and are setting up in moving water, the Fotopro Origin might not be the best fit for you. You’ll need something taller and heavier, like the Fotopro T-Roc Max (check out my review of this tripod here). If you’re looking for a super lightweight and compact tripod, the Fotopro X-Aircross 2 (check out my review here) is a great option. The Fotopro Origin sits comfortably in between these two: taller than the X-Aircross 2, but lighter than the T-Roc Max.

Fotopro Origin Travel Tripod vs. Fotopro Origin Plus Travel Tripod

The main differences between the Origin and Origin Plus are related to height and weight:

  • The Origin tripod supports up to 15kg (33 lbs) of load, while the Origin Plus supports up to 20kg (44 lbs)

  • The Origin weighs 1.33kg (2.93 lbs). The Origin Plus weighs 1.53kg (3.37 lbs)

  • The Origin’s maximum height is 1516MM (59.68in), while the Origin Plus’s maximum height is 1534MM (60.39in)

Ultimately, it comes down to what you’re comfortable with as a photographer. If you’re looking for something that’s slightly shorter (at its maximum height) and lighter, the Origin tripod is for you. If you want a slightly beefier and taller tripod, I recommend looking into the Origin Plus.

Similar Features

  • Strong load capacity.

  • Pure carbon fiber trapezoidal (diamond) tubes, which means stronger pressure resistance and stronger torsional resistance. Every curve and angle of the trapezoidal tube has been precisely calculated and rigorously tested to provide a better grip and stronger resistance to pressure.

  • The diamond shape tubing makes the tripod more compact when folded, which can save you a lot of space. According to Fotopro, their diamond tubes take up 33.3% less space compared to ordinary round tube tripods.

  • Quick release for fast shooting.

  • Patented flip lock, which opens faster and requires less effort. The secure locking mechanism provides a soft and comfortable grip.

  • Both tripods come with a special bag that has pockets for storing SD cards, small accessories, and tools.

Conclusion

I’ve always been very happy with my Fotopro tripods. They’re thoughtfully designed, well-engineered, extremely stable, and they hold up well over time. If you’re looking for a compact, lightweight tripod that will serve you for years to come, I highly recommend buying any of Fotopro’s tripods, especially the Origin Plus.

Hey everyone! If your Chromecast is acting up, you might need to reset chromecast. I found a clear guide that walks you through the factory reset process step by step. It’s easy to follow and helps fix most common issues with the device. Definitely a useful read for anyone who wants their Chromecast running smoothly again.

Great review — you can tell it’s written by someone who actually uses the gear and not just quoting specs. 😉 I also love when the conversation goes beyond equipment into the art of shooting itself — for example, I came across an interesting piece here: https://skylum.com/blog/travel-anti-trend. Travel and cameras are such a perfect combo, because it’s not only about capturing an image but also the feeling of the moment.

One cold evening in York, I decided to distract myself online and landed on https://liraspins.org. I wasn’t expecting much and nearly closed it after losing several times. But with one lucky round, I managed not only to recover but also to end up with a little extra. That small victory was enough to make me return again. It’s become my casual pastime whenever the long English nights feel too slow.
