Summit Creative Tenzing 50L Roll Top Camera Backpack Review

This is a review of the Tenzing 50L Roll Top camera backpack made by Summit Creative. This spacious, lightweight bag will hold plenty of photo gear, yet still fit in the overhead bin of most airlines.

Tenzing 50L Roll Top Camera Backpack review highlights

The Tenzing 50L Roll Top Camera Backpack is relatively lightweight, sturdy, comfortable, and it holds a lot of camera gear.

The Tenzing is optimized for hiking; its narrow, tall design helps keep weight off your shoulders, even when your pack is full of heavy camera gear (use the waist belt, sternum strap, and load lifter straps to keep weight on your hips instead of your shoulders). I found that I could comfortably hike for long periods of time with the Tenzing on my back.

Taller, narrower photo backpacks, although ideal for carrying heavy loads, aren't optimized for carrying lots of big camera gear. That said, the Tenzing 50L has a few tricks up its sleeves, allowing you to cram in extra gear. You can expand or contract different parts of the pack to optimize space for gear storage, making it easier to find space even for large items.

Some of my favorite features of the Tenzing include the following:

  • Roll top expansion: With the rolltop design, the Tenzing can easily expand to accommodate extra gear or personal items, making it a versatile and convenient option for any adventure.

  • 3D EVA moulded back panel: This optimizes comfort and airflow, helping to minimize back fatigue and sweat.

  • An inverted U-shaped internal aluminum pipe provides support, helping keep weight off your shoulders and thus improving comfort while carrying heavy loads.

  • You can easily adjust the ratio between the camera compartment and top storage. With five adjustable configurations to choose from, you'll have all the space you need for your gear.

  • Weather resistant nylon repels water in case of unexpected rain or spills. An optional rain cover adds an extra layer of protection.

  • Side and rear access, allowing for easy and quick access to your equipment from different angles.

  • Multiple tripod mounting options on either the left or right side of the backpack, as well as on the front or bottom side.

Bonus video for PRO Members

There's nothing worse than going on a photo trip that involves a lot of sweaty hikes, only to realize just before you go to the airport for your trip home that your photo backpack STINKS, and that anything it makes contact with (including the clothes on your back) will get stinky too. I've produced a short video for Photo Masters PRO Members with some helpful tips for removing the funk from your pack, making your travel experience much more fresh and delightful, and helping to keep everyone on the plane from hating you.
