This was my first time ever shooting a solar eclipse, and I wasn't sure what to expect. As expected I overshot the event, and ended up with about 300 images. This was my favorite because the clouds (that I assumed would ruin the event) actually gave the image some atmosphere and mood, that that other shots simply lacked. This was a 3 shot bracket, that I used the darkest and lightest frames to blend the image. Breaking from typical convention, I used a black frame for this shot -- because hey -- it was an eclipse!

Honestly... I didn't think 2023 was a great year of photography for me. My dreamy light prediction meter® was way out of tune, and even after several amazing trips, the yield of compelling dreamy light shots was quite low. This shot being the obvious exception. That's the game though, and all the more reason to continue to get out there this year and keep chipping away.

With the recent eruption in Iceland, I thought it would be fun to post a photo I took of the Fagradalsfjall lava field back in July of 2021.

This was an area I've wanted to visit for many years. I finally got the chance this summer and it did not disappoint. I went with a tighter crop for this particular shot to incorporate the little edge of flowers as the foreground element, and showcase the massiveness of the cliffs as a counterpoint. Nothing creative, or inventive about what's going on here. I remember @ian saying in one of his photography lectures to "Get the iconic shot, and then discover creative alternatives". Well... I stopped at the iconic shot, and hiked on out to get away from the highland midges. .

The funny thing about this photo is that it all happened after a full day of shooting in the park. As we were driving out of the park, I noticed the row of Brittlebush and the craggy peak in the distance. I quickly assembled my gear, fired off a few shots, and thought no more about it. This is actually one of my favorite shots from the trip. I feel the waning light of blue hour really gives this shot a dark moody vibe that really illustrates the desert's transition into night.
