I was struck by this quiet, pre-sunrise moment as I moved to position the cormorant (and rock) into the gap between the two reflected hills. It occurred to me later that we were both, each with our own agenda, waiting for the sun to rise. – Eagle Lake, Acadia NP

This image may take you on a a bit of a conceptual journey. At first, it’s pure design; three horizontal stripes of color like a mid-century field painting. Then you realize what you are seeing is the forest’s warm spring growth reflected within a narrow strip of water across a frozen lake. The story is there, but you have to look for it. - Sylvan Lake, Yellowstone NP.

This is probably not what you were expecting, but in this image the natural lines of perspective convey less of a feeling of depth (or leading lines) than one of defining flat graphic areas of light and dark. Add to that the phantom shapes of the two people and it becomes a somewhat surreal image. This image, by the way, is a single frame capture.

This image was a product of planning and processing. It is focus stacked, star stacked, and in an effort to actually reduce the sense of depth, focal (or perspective) stacked. Because I used a wide-angle lens (16mm) on the foreground/landscape, the forced perspective of the lens rendered the mountains on the horizon as much too small and/or distant. In order to bring them back to a more realistic and pleasing size, I photographed the scene with a 50mm lens (changing the perspective in relation to the other elements) and then blended the mountains with the night sky and the rest of the landscape to complete the scene.

I was enthralled about the way only the top half of this geyser was backlighted by the setting sun while the rest remained in shadow. An exposure of 1/500 sec at f/7.1 and iso of 400 did enough to freeze the action.

Photographers travel the world to capture compelling subjects. To photograph this critter, I only had to go as far as my garage. (She) showed up for a couple of weeks and was simply lit by an exterior light.

The result of a set of bracketed photos taken during the totality phase of a total solar eclipse. I picked the best exposure for each element and combined them in Photoshop. Note: the brighter "star" in the lower left is actually the planet Mercury. f/8, ISO 400, Bracketed in 2 stop increments from 1/2 sec to 1/8000 sec.
