We climbed Huangshan in 2005, and it was very difficult as the stairs are very uneven in height and also because I needed a knee replacement so it was painful. We stayed in the hotel at the top. At that time everything in the hotel had to be carried up by porters who could only make one trip per day with their heavy loads balanced on a pole across their shoulders. Four porters would also carry a person in a chair on a platform up the mountain, which seemed incredible. In the morning we went out and sat on the steps to see sunrise. Often there is too much fog to see sunrise but we were lucky and saw a pretty sunrise. It is one of China's sacred mountains and a very special experience.
