Took a hike on Rough Ridge on the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina some years ago. I've been up this trail a couple of times, whenever we take the Parkway on our trips between CT and FL. The high elevation makes for some dramatic foliage. At the end of the trail there are huge boulders where people sit and enjoy the view. You can see the Linn Viaduct, a famous elevated roadway on the parkway, from those heights. Rough Ridge is a short hike, maybe a half-mile, but over wet slippery boulders, tree roots and the trail is very narrow. Still, it is very worthwhile for the great view. Youngsters just dash up in their sneakers, but as an elderly woman with a bad back, I now wear my hiking shoes and take my Leki poles. LOL
