Chapel of Ease, St. Helena Island, South Carolina. Built in 1742-1747 to serve the rice and cotton planters on St. Helena Island who had a long trip to reach the main parish church in Beaufort. It was once called the White Church because of its tabby construction of oyster shells and lime which made it glow white. The church was abandoned when planters evacuated the island in 1861 during the Civil War when Union soldiers took over the region but was used by Northererns who came to the island to educate freed slaves. It was heavily damaged in a forest fire in 1886. Only a ruin remains.
