I really love the overall mood of this, the stormy skies add drama and texture. I also like the streaks of the outgoing waves, which help lead the eye into the composition. I often recommend using leading elements more boldly, and I think that could have been done here to improve the composition. So, how to get bolder lines? I think getting closer to the incoming surf and waiting for a wave to come in and wash past you, and then start shooting with a half-second to one second exposure as the wave washes back out - this would create much bolder leading lines. You'll need to have sturdy tripod to do this, of course (and make sure the waves aren't too big before getting close to the edge of the water). Usually, I get my tripod legs into the sand a few inches deep, and let a wave or two wash over the tripod to make sure it isn't going to move during the long exposure. You can also look for something sticking out of the water, like a boulder, to create more interest in the foreground. Here are a few examples from my image files:
