Avocet at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Florida. Its genus name, Recurvirostra, comes from Latin recurvus, 'curved backwards' and rostrum, 'bill'. We don't often see these beautiful birds and, when we do, they are often too far away to photograph. On this day, I got lucky.
